Disk Utility disk repair fails

i'm running osx 10.4.11 on 12" powerbook 1.5 ghz 1.25 gb of ram , 80 gb hd.

when run disk utility verify disk, ends message, "error: underlying task reported failure on exit." happens if run disk utility hard drive, osx installation disk or external hard drive.

repair drive button grayed out no matter running disk utility from, too.

far, haven't had other unusual things operation, i'm concerned warning of problems come.

has else had problem or have clue?

have cloned entire hard drive onto external drive carbon copy cloner. know ppc systems won't boot usb drive, considering booting install disk, re-formatting drive there , re-installing external running ccc there. hope have direct solution repairing drive without doing of that.

i'll appreciate clues certain! :)

try opening terminal (under applications/utilities) , typing "mount".

disk mounted / (it should first line of output after "/dev/"). on system "disk0s2". type:

sudo /sbin/fsck_hfs -f /dev/[disk]

[disk] disk mounted / on system.

may want try booting mac os x install disc well, give option of repairing broken.

if find fsck_hfs doesn't work, should try alternate solution such disk warrior or drive genius.

thing check "s.m.a.r.t. status" on disk utility. make sure says "verified". if says "failing" in red, need replace hard drive. here guide can use.

luck repair! went through similar issue many years 15" powerbook, , ended swapping out hard drive larger 1 7200 rpm. great upgrade considering original smaller , slower.
