FML load cycle count and the clicks of MacDOOM

so re-installed fresh copy of sl on 3,1 mbp. working fine until last night when started getting annoying (ta-chick) noise.
used smart utility check load cycle count , on 600k, works out 100 per hour(...)

preemptively ordered hitachi 7200rpm 500gb drive(which had been meaning do), question this:

-is age of drive?(roughly 1.5 years)
-is outdated?(firmware etc)
-or fail?

last question: when receive 7200rpm drive, can install recent firmware update 7200rpm drives, or newer(uni-body) style mbps?
*http://support.apple.com/downloads/hard_drive_firmware_update_2_0* update i'm talking about

takes time answer questions, i'm going nuts listening drive click every few seconds.

further reading makes common mac/linux...should count on having buy new drive every year?
