Hard drive disappeared!


so received new mac after having many problems old macbook. when started up, hard disk found in finder, whereas on desktop. when dragged , released onto desktop, went poof! , never seen again. i've done search through finder , cannot find anywhere. can without searching through finder - hard disk button-thingy (especially on desktop!). please help!
 

the latest version of mac os x (called "snow leopard") removes hard drive off desktop keep nice , clean. if want there, here's need do:

while on desktop, go "finder" menu (in menu bar @ top of screen) , select "preferences." under "general" say, "show these items on desktop." check box "hard disks."

now, hard drive's icon in finder window (the 1 went 'poof'), open new finder window (by clicking on finder's icon in dock). go finder menu again (at top of screen) , select "preferences." under tab called "sidebar," check box "hard disks."
