i have mpeg-2 home movies want edit in imovie hd, , need converted. they're in mpeg-2 format , container mpeg program stream. they're in 720x480, 4:3 , 16:9 aspect ratio.
way i've found far copy audio run them through mpegstreamclip, offers many options exporting. discovered if select 720x480-ntsc video clip aspect ratio of 4:3, comes out of mpegstreamclip aspect ratio of 3:2. can fix selecting 640x480, don't know if that's best choice in terms of preserving quality. haven't tried 16x9 clip yet, i'm assuming have choose other 720x480-ntsc well, in order preserve aspect ratio.
want preserve quality of original videos, as possible, intend create dvd's viewed on widescreen tv. videos standard definition, don't expect them hd, close original quality can possibly get. can suggest options give me best results? i've tried tests h.264 pretty good, it's hard tell how work overall based on 1 or 2 short clips. 1 thing h.264 uses same chroma subsampling format (yuv420p) original videos, color , brightness characteristics preserved.
also, better deinterlace before editing, after editing, or never? i've done lot of research haven't found definitive answer. anyway, h.264 conversion produces clip that, according videospec, progressive. still seems interlaced, though, maybe videospec giving incorrect information in case.
thing i'm confused about...i can import mpegs directly imovie camcorder, , imovie automatically convert them qt .mov container (with audio). however, if copy same mpeg2 camcorder computer's hard drive, imovie won't allow them imported, they're greyed-out. seems strange? of videos no longer on camcorder's hard drive (it's sony dcr-sr100), in computer, have converted. i'm wondering if it's idea, in future, import directly imovie mpeg-2's, or convert else first. i've read mpeg-2 isn't format editing. imovie converting else, haven't figured out way check that.
summarize, i'm looking suggestions regarding format, container, size, , deinterlacing. hopefully, more knowledge , experience me can save me lot of time...this trial , error stuff getting old!
it's better let imovie conversion.
find out, imovie uses, go users / / movies 7imovie , imported media , open in quicktime player , press cmd+i open movie inspector.
likely, imovie converts footage .mov files using dv codec.
