still cannot decide whether should go more affordable (17" i5 8gb ram) 500gb 7500rpm drive or 128gb ssd ? know 128gb small, can tell how used os applications , stuff when first use mac (and what's left free) ?

depending on apps, size vary. have adobe, office , osx , other mandatory apps 3gb iphoto library , push 30 gigs. if don't have adobe , of stuff expect around 10-15.
plenty of space. ssd worth it, won't go platter drive. advise intel 3rd party drive , not buy upgraded ssd option apple. faster, , handle better. small spike in battery life (i got 20mins upgrading ssd). upgrade painless , there plethora of youtube videos illustrating process.
if ssd, make sure update latest firmware (an easy process dictated on intel's site).
