Humble comparison: Macbook Pro i5 2.4Ghz high res antiglare vs. i7 2.66Ghz glossy

post objective others in dilemma of i5 2.4ghz 2.53ghz , i7 2.66ghz, , high resolution antiglare vs. standard resolution glossy.

screen:
owing top of line i7, , after reading lot antiglare , high resolution went apple store (twice) check , compare both screens. spent around 2.5 h trying make mind, looking @ different angles, playing movies, launching applications, etc. giving in trying find solution when apple store rep. talked me. suggestion @ same picture on both computers @ full screen. said photos , prints, antiglare image closer in prints (with out monitor calibration off course). when started looking @ pictures closely , detail, see clarity , quality of same picture better , "crispier" on antiglare on stock glossy resolution. turn point , made decision on antiglare high res. there other reasons why wanted antiglare, reflections getting in home; point made once looked @ clarity of pictures in high res screen compared standard res.

1 point noticed in high res screen application fonts small , maybe uncomfortable me on iwork applications. icons format bar small. in office, seem ok eyes (i need glasses long distance sight).

can looking @ both machines @ home, glossy colors more vivid, , viewing angles better antiglare looks little bit washed off me. still, prefer not have reflections , crispier pictures.

cpu:
went ahead , refund approval amazon , looked high res antiglare screen. found options i5's , long waiting i7's. decided times of gaming long in past (quake (i, ii, iii, iv), doom 3), , not intensive graphic design on home machine, therefore, i7 on killing machine us. wanted mac, when refresh on wild, bought i7 right away, nice piece of greatness, came realize indeed of needed. options antiglare in i5 , thinking 2.53ghz right option, went ahead , order 1 macmall. later on day realized (and after reading little bit more) differences between 2.53 , 2.4ghz small real daily use (one can argue encoding, super high cpu intensive tasks, etc. on years of use save time, talking bout real use) 2.53 overkill again price/benefit stand point. also, rationale this: benchmarks (and not real daily use) show new i5 2.4 lower end of new macbook pros faster once upper 2.8ghz c2d latest generation macbook pro. argue having i7 give longevity machines, following rationale, doesn't make sense. think see better machines in future low end products faster todays i7's. differences between i5 2.4 , 2.53 cpu speed, hdd capacity (not speed, both being 5400rpm, , amount of video memory. cpu diff in benchmarks show little difference, video memory not issue me (as explained above), , when had i7 knew wanted change hdd 7200 rpm one, had ordered 7200 rpm 500gb hitachi hd20500 idk/7k amazon. therefore, went ahead , cancelled i5 2.53ghz , order 2.4ghz high res antiglare.

management of "sleep" function on mac os x might not of interest boot times, f’ound there slower boot time in 2.4 compared 2.66. now, both hdd’s 5400rpm, 1 in i5 2.4ghz 320gb toshiba mk3255gsxf , 1 in i7 2.66ghz 500gb hitachi hts545050b9sa02. did 20 times , i5 2.4ghz boot time average 41 sec , i7 2.66ghz average boot time 28 sec. surprised me since thought major factor boot time hdd , not cpu. these real numbers. honest, did comparison on boot times after saw youtube video guy compares side side i5 2.4ghz vs i7 2.66ghz boot times, without i7 being faster. well, is.

did clean install on 7200 rpm 500gb hitachi hd20500 idk/7k since wanted have new factory. after installed snow leopard, , applications come in other dvd, , installed current updates ran boot time test again. impressed because boot time in i5 2.4ghz average 27 sec ! well, knew faster hdd make impact, puts i5 i7 !!!

might sound strange, observation temperature 3 5 degc higher on i5 2.4ghz i7 2.66ghz. know not make sense, true when leaving both computers highest screen brightness, not sleep, not screen off. let them both sit there while, , results 3 5 degc difference (measured smcfancontrol , istat widget). after open same youtube video , let run on both, temperatures leveled up, still i5 still 1 degc hotter i7. must admit weird result me since in theory i5 should consume less energy, therefore less heat produced should come it. got results. maybe isolated expample new i5 2.4ghz.

finally, extremely happy final decision , result. think bigger resolution wonderful, , here @ home, macbook pro i5 2.4ghz more enough, , case many people out there. many other have said this, better hdd, better if sdd (i still think price/benefit factor not optimum yet), more ram, , have fast , responsive machine. if need punch on cpu , video memory, go i7 , better if high res. i5 2.53ghz mid point not optimum.

cheers ! :)
k.

it interesting i5 runs warmer i7?
