modern trend of microprocessors’ development focused around creation of devices many cores possible. however, there algorithms cannot benefit many-core architectures or multi-threading execution. in order boost performance of single-threaded applications on multi-core microprocessors, intel corp. outlined technology called “anaphase”.

researchers intel labs barcelona have developed “anaphase” technology, novel hardware/software hybrid approach leverage multiple cores in order improve single-thread performance on multi-core processors. research focuses on different speculative techniques automatically partition single thread applications processed on multiple cores.

proposed technique features set of novel hardware mechanisms support execution of threads generated @ compile time. these threads result fine-grain speculative decomposition of original application , executed under modified multi-core system includes: mechanisms support multiple versions; mechanisms detect violations among threads; mechanisms reconstruct original sequential order; , mechanisms checkpoint architectural state , recovery handle misspeculations. on hardware side, new unit called “inter-core memory coherency module” (icmc) integrated die of future processors.

according intel, proposed hardware/software scheme outperforms previous hardware-only schemes implement idea of combining cores executing single-thread applications in multi-core design more 10% on average on spec2006 configurations. moreover, single-thread performance improved 41% on average when proposed scheme used on so-called “tiny-core” (intel did not reveal, tiny-core is, may potentially part of company’s ssc 48-core processor), , 2.6 times selected applications.
