Can I manually drag back files from Time Machine?

i'm planning reinstall snow leopard. i'm using time machine. want avoid automatic solutions "restore time machine backup" , migration assistant because want make sure system stays clean.

how imagine it:
boot freshly installed system, plug in time machine external drive, open finder , start dragging stuff need (photos, music , documents) if regular external hard drive files on it. reinstall applications manually.

work? please tell me if have ever tried , whether worked. not cause problems permissions or that?

should work fine. can play , view files backed via tm fine
