Word for Mac 2008 deletes accents (é, etc.)

hey guys,

i'm having trouble fully-patched installation of word:mac 2008 running on 10.6.3 – it's taken deleting accents try type, annoying when trying write in french.

example, grave accent (é), i'll press option+e , it'll prompt me press key add accent, word deletes accent before can add it. i've tried disabling autocorrect no avail. word programme happens in (excel, pages , chrome work expected).

has else experienced this? should bite bullet, reinstall office , apply 3gb worth of patches again?
