External monitor stuck in Power Save Mode

i have aluminum imac. got free gateway lcd monitor on craigslist. owner swears working 2 months ago , wouldn't stand gain lying that, since free. has vga input. when hook , turn on, displays message power save mode , goes black.

system profiler detects monitor there:
gateway fpd1730:
resolution: 1024 x 768 @ 75 hz
pixel depth: 32-bit color (argb8888)
mirror: off
online: yes
rotation: supported

know wrong? tried switching vga cable , dvi vga adapter in case 1 of bad, didn't help. have 1 mini-dvi dvi adapter, can't try 1 of those. (it's obnoxious apple doens't use standard dvi connector.)

in quick @ adapter on apple store, doesn't have 4 pins around blade on 1 side (c1-c4 on pin out on wikipedia).

pins carry analog vga signal. check adapter, if aren't there won't work.
