Help with "network" accounts

i need set network accounts, accessible many computers. i'd prefer way doesn't require mac os x server (if there isn't one, please still post 1 needs it). if can help, have windows server (2003, think), too.

i'd set network accounts have same auth info, store files locally when save them, synchronize server in background.

there difference between network accounts , network "sync" accounts.

typical terminology is: network account , mobile account.

main difference mobile accounts cached on local machine, reducing network strain. network account working directly off server.

os x server, of course, can set mobile accounts referred portable home directories or phd.

while have never done it. can done ad server , os x active directory plugin. basic setup be:

1. setup ad
2. add user
3. add network home location "unc path" field in ad user
4. bind mac ad via directory utility
5. when binding, sure select these options:
"create mobile account @ login" , "use unc path active directory derive network home location" (wording may different in 10.5 , under).
6. once user logged in, can setup file sync mobile account via systems preferences ---> accounts

other solutions application chronosync. of course, sync , wouldn't using same directory record.
