this problem started after did reinstall of itunes resolve unrelated issue. when connect 3g ipod touch mbp, itunes no longer launches use to.
have "open itunes when ipod connected" checked in summary page ipod.
1 difference noticed before , after itunes reinstall though no longer there item called "itunes helper" in system preferences/accounts/login items list. use there before reinstall. wonder if it's related issue.

itunes helper process allows happen. add list of programs launch @ login, follow these steps:
applications>itunes>right click: show package contents>contents>resources>and drag ituneshelper.app list
