or, there other suggestions on setup 2 new hds??
i'm open suggestions.

i'm doing video processing dvd release.
should max out 2x1t gig hds , not worry hd failure??

you limited 2 drive slots. in scenario works best small fast drive (eg velocirapter or ssd) osx/applications , large drive video files. not advisable have operating system running striped array.
since have drives, here can do.
install 1 new drive , format partition wish use osx. may not want use whole drive osx, make 2 partitions. sure gpt-formatted can boot.
use carboncopy cloner copy current osx partition new one.
set startup disk new partition.
remove old drive , replace second new one.
reboot, , partition/format new drive.
hey cutterman,
advice. sounds set-up. i'll have research process of doing you've advised, but, should work out ok:
limited 2 drive slots. in scenario works best small fast drive (eg velocirapter or ssd) osx/applications , large drive video files. not advisable have operating system running striped array.
since have drives, here can do.
a. install 1 new drive , format partition wish use osx. may not want use whole drive osx, make 2 partitions:
1. partitions done under disc utilities correct? never done before; take look.
b. sure gpt-formatted can boot.
2. gpt done under disc utilities, correct? here start bit confused, i've formatted extended journal, so, partition osx & applications formatted gpt, , rest of hd formatted extended journal?
c. use carboncopy cloner copy current osx partition new one.
3. so, partition first new hd , use carbon copy cloner (also under disc utilities) copy osx & applications original hd first new hd, correct?
d. set startup disk new partition.
4. option when setup partition???
e. remove old drive , replace second new one.
f. reboot, , partition/format new drive.
5. question: so, recommend not striping hds: if raid 1, sets mirror of hds, , since first new hd partitioned osx & applications, , set startup disk, second new hd mirror that?? question: if second new hd not mirror osx & applications, second hd mirror space/partition not utilized osx & applications partition, correct?
help!!

ok try answer questions. begin, if want mirror 2 drives need boot sl install dvd or external (usb/firewire) drive set up. imo purposes hassle , waste of hd space.
1) yes partitions created in disk utility
2) yes, choose volume scheme (ie number of partitions) , size them dragging separator bar. select planned boot partition , click options..., choose gpt. think default check , make sure. extended journaled usual format.
3) need download carbon copy. free tool copy entire image of current system partition new 1 , make bootable. consider making donation useful , updated utility. intuitive use. can use restore feature in disk utility have had more experience carbon copy.
4) once copy process finished new boot partition show under startup disk selections (this tool in system preferences).
from 666sheep:
if may correct 1 thing: op, don't choose gpt (guid partition table). got ppc mac (g5), valid partition type apple partition map (apm).
gpt intel macs , not able boot kind of partition.
from cutterman:
thanks correction- bad. no familiarity non-intel macs.
