so last year, purchased mac mini way feet wet apple beyond iphone (to switched blackberry). prior this, i'd been lifelong pc user no major problems speak of. didn't rampant downloads, kept firewall , virus protection on, etc. did have dell die on me, wasn't huge deal.
i'm not trying start war of words here fan boys; instead, these thoughts i've had after using products year.
1. software perspective, products. os x good, although must give thumbs down, based on experience, snow leopard. repeatedly lose internet connection sporadically , without warning. once wiped hard drive , returned computer original state, no problems. aside that, software.
2. hardware issue. have been fortunate far mini has worked. had kernel panic once nothing since then. don't hardware when compared pc: first, slot-loading disc drives. many, have experienced scratched discs. inconceivable me let go on how many years , still no design fix? unacceptable. second, presumably because form factors small, of discs eject hot touch. in pc, happens. wonder if can degrade quality of discs on time. no proof on that, curiosity.
3. heat buildup. why apple products run hot? iphone scary hot. once had in open-top shirt pocket streaming music , when took out, scared battery might blow because hot. no case on either, wonder happens when stream music , have case. note, streaming 10-15 minutes when happened.
once considered imac , macbook until saw how hot get. suffice say, shocked watching ten minutes of video on hulu in apple store make bottom of notebook uncomfortably hot touch. if happens on hulu video, doesn't bode can expect when compiling programs. once saw wrote on apple's support boards put fan behind computer cool down. perhaps ultimate example of product loyalty.
little nano gets way hot when charging. have habit of letting charge ten minutes or because don't trust it.
4. design: love way mini looks sitting on desk. go comment earlier on macbook, other reason besides heat passed when enclosed batteries. unacceptable me have haul laptop store , hand on financial data , proprietary work "geniuses" , trust ok. skilled enough computers can swap own laptop battery , fiercely resent apple telling me not allowed that.
5. quality control: sadly, here, bad marks too. after ruling out macbooks because of heat , battery enclosure, considered 27 " imacs when came out. started see rampant stories of screen issues, flash issues, etc. how can company such apple prides on "just working" allow such garbage happen? it's no small feat pack imac , haul local mall fixed. realize majority of them may fine there enough issues don't trust it.
1 disappointment i've had quality relates power cord on iphone. i've had 1 separate @ ends being coiled in pocket. 1 day compared thickness/design @ joints of iphone power cord , blackberry power cord (the latter of never had issues). guess what? berry's power cord thicker , has more reinforcement @ joints. iphone cost double berry cost, can you, apple, give few pennies of margin , make power cord can hold being coiled up?
6. flash , headphones, etc: not going start war on flash. it, hate it. bothers me when mini's browsers crash when playing flash application pc handles fine. read steve's note on flash, wherein, among other things, blamed of mac crashes. here's news flash (pun intended): maybe it's not flash, maybe it's computers need work able run without crashing. again, pc, running windows 7, fine when playing flash videos.
also, why $40 pair of apple's headphones have cord 6 " shorter $10 pair picked cvs? not want sit desktop in lap when need use headphones.
put out there see if others have had similar thoughts, not in childish tug-of-war on if pc's or macs better. pc's have issues , i've experienced of those. in experience, neither 1 wins in landslide, me, advantage pc, slightly, now. pc seems more reliable, runs cooler, doesn't scratch cd's, plays flash, , can more. hope apple can gets act because 1 year in, thoughts can summed "room improvement."
what never understood price premium comparable pc. apple charges way , installs dated technology. image , exclusivity they're selling.
bothers me though, lack of care on apple's part fix yellow tint issue. people still receiving screens yellow tinge across screen. how acceptable? how?
