Cant get gmail to work with mail aplication

hello, im new member @ forum.

have problem mail aplication. can not gmail work it, dont know why. tried , nothing, remove , try again , same thing. itrs written: the gmail imap server “imap.gmail.com” not responding. try checking network connection, , server name correct. otherwise, server might temporarily unavailable. if continue, might not able receive messages

have hotmail, , works without problem.
enable imap server @ gmail when go through website directly.

im useing mac os x

mail application is 4.2 version...
