try different dvi cable, longer ones that, on 30" display or adc display using dvi adapter.
thing try making sure fan clean , running @ decent speed. x800 had 3 wire fan, ths ability raise , lower speed based on heat.
if card firegl flashed x800 (ie..2 @ dvi ports instead of adc , dvi port) may running hair fast. thomas perrier has software allows try lowering ram , gpu clocks on fly. not sure how works in 10.5.8. try whacking 25 mhz off ram speed , see if artifacts disappear. if so, use other software dump rom card, change clock speeds, , reflash.
check of these things first before calling quits on card.
