Mac Mini Optical Out not working, Help plz!

hi,

have huge problem.

have hooked 2009 mac mini (2.16, 4 gb ram, sl 10.6.3) sony receiver.
when using analogue cable, works, in stereo of course.
plugged in tosslink optical cable, , nothing happened, thought maybe cable broken, bought new one.
when plugged in, worked....for 2 hours.
since then, had no luck whatsoever, no sound, nothing, nada.
tried using cable macbook, worked charm.
several reboots , pram reset later, same thing, no sound.
checked settings, there's nothing change there, it's set digital out , that's it.

tried ridiculously long terminal command reset core audio, no avail.

so, ideas?

can't have experience this, have looked @ audio midi setup utility in utilities folder?
