OS X Mail app loads every email to hard drive?

i´ve never used os x mail app. i´ve used gmail account safari. thought i´d give try...

first thing noticed, started downloading emails. download hard drive, ´cause don´t want that!

can view emails through mail app without downloading them hard drive?

 

you can tell leave messages on server still going create local copy on hard drive.
