Aged newby wonders how can Mac apps be sync'd with iPod apps

my elderly brain missing here. i'm setting first ipod touch , i'm asked if want automatically sync apps ipod. surely apps macs , apps ipod touch need incompatible versions of apps. how can sync'd?
