Apple Hardware Test not installed?

trying figure out why new 2010 mbp getting kernel panics. mac newbie consulted manual + internet. apparently if hold down 'd' key whilst booting machine should start aht, mine doesn't.

need insert applications dvd in order aht start.

there way can install aht? removed when reinstalled sl?

wish apple added more information startup screen (like bios based computers) - e.g. press 'c' boot cd rom, press 'd' aht etc, because right there's no feedback or information user :-s

you don't install apple hardware test- runs off disc.
