Where's the setting for the digital compass?

hi

opened maps application , noticed had digital compass on 3gs.

turning ipad around , location on screen rotating in realtime. closed app down , tried again, can't seem back. don't remember having set option anywhere.

the circle next contacts button toggles off>current location>compass>off.
