Permission problems w/ external startup disk

so, have old macbook pro 2007 got damaged , wouldn't recognise hard drive anymore. took apart , took out hard drive , connected current macbook using sata usb adapter.
didn't have backup, tried moving files external startup disk directly external backup drive (dragging files old startup disk new external drive, without putting them on computer first).

i've run 2 problems:
firstly, old startup disk has 101gb of files on it, when try move files says copying 84gb of files. why doesn't move files?

secondly, halfway through copying got error message saying don't have permission access "system preferences" on old startup disk. tried using chmod -r on old startup disk allow me copy files, same error message when trying again.

hope able me - in advance! :)

i can't tell permissions since mac appears have fried logic board, can tell getting 84 gigs because reest of data in hidden folders. easiest way copy entire disk without having mess permissions go disk utiliy , make fisk image of disk.
